I Never Promised You a Rose Garden - Joanne Greenberg This is one of the first books I can remember being utterly fascinated with. I haven't read it in years but I will never forget its impact, all those years ago. It's extremely well done, brutal and raw, beautiful and scary.

The Kathleen Quinlan movie doesn't do too bad a job with it, either.
